Various organs such as the intestines and lungs are covered by film-like epithelial tissue. In normal epithelial tissue, the cells are arranged neatly. In the early stage of cancer cell metastasis, epithelial cells are deformed after being stimulated, and the epithelial tissue becomes fragmented, which causes cancer and cancer cell metastasis. However, researchers have been unclear about the mechanisms by which epithelial tissue can maintain good condition.
The team found that if the renal tubules in the chicken embryos were removed, the epithelial cells adjacent to the renal tubules would be deformed, and the oncogenes would be implanted. After the stimulation, the epithelial cells became fragmented and the cancer metastasized.
However, if the adrenal cells are implanted with the oncogene, the epithelial cells will not become fragmented. The researchers pointed out that this is because the renal tubules can make fibronectin, fill the gap between cells, promote the adhesion growth of cells, so that the adjacent epithelial tissue remains normal and prevent the metastasis of cancer cells.
Researchers say that fibronectin is expected to develop cancer treatments that prevent side-effects of cancer cells with fewer side effects.
