During the circulation process, product packaging encounters various potential hazards at any time. There are many types of dangers, such as bumps in transportation, heavy pressure in storage, adverse weather effects, collisions during loading and unloading, and so on. Therefore, product packaging design must withstand all kinds of rigorous tests including barbaric loading and unloading. During the circulation process, product loss is required to be within the allowable range.

In order to reduce the loss of packaging products in the circulation process and ensure the safety of transportation, the national standards and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Transportation Regulations stipulate the product packaging performance test requirements, which also stipulate the drop test requirements. For example, the GB325-91 national standard and the Class I requirements for the 200L small-open steel drum of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Transportation Regulations stipulate that the steel drum has a drop height of 1.8m (referring to the density of the container is less than 1.2). In other words, steel drums that meet this standard fall from a height of 1.8 m without leakage in 98% of the water. Analysis of the ground reaction forces experienced by the steel drum during the drop test is a kinetic study. Proper estimation of these data can provide a basis for improving the quality of steel drums. The expensive impact tester can be used to accurately calculate various parameters, and record the impact pulse velocity change, acceleration change, and impact duration of each drop. It is then processed by a computer analyzer to yield useful parameters.

The approximation method can be used to estimate the ground reaction force of the steel drum in the drop test.

In the calculation, the time and speed required for the steel drum to fall from the height of 1.8 m to the ground are first obtained. These parameters can be accurately calculated according to the free fall principle.

Assume that the steel drum falls from the height of 1.8 meters to the ground, from the beginning of the impact to the end of the deformation, the vertical displacement x2 due to the deformed steel drum is 9.5 cm (determined according to the actual measurement). The potential energy of the steel drum from 1. 8m high is converted into kinetic energy impacting the ground.
