Let’s take a look at the wood that pretends to be a large fruit rosewood.

With the depletion of traditional rosewood materials such as *Lobular rosewood*, *Hainan Huanghuali*, and *Laos Red Rosewood*, large fruit rosewood has emerged as the dominant choice in the mahogany furniture market. Known as the "popular lover" of the industry, it is now the most widely used wood in the production of high-quality mahogany furniture. Commonly referred to as **Burmese rosewood**, large fruit rosewood falls under the national "Redwood" standard and is therefore classified as a true redwood species. It is primarily sourced from Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, with trade names such as *Burmapadauk*, *Pradeo*, and *Maydo*. As its popularity grows, so does the problem of fraud. Many counterfeit products are being sold as large fruit rosewood, making it essential for buyers to know how to distinguish real from fake. Below are some of the most common wood species that are often mistaken for Burmese rosewood: 1. **Afghan** A member of the *Sumac* genus, this wood has a scattered pore structure and features single or double tube holes. The heartwood is reddish-brown, often containing dark gum or sediment. Axial thin-walled tissue appears in wing-like and ring-shaped patterns. With an air-dry density of 0.80–0.83 g/cm³, it’s also known as “pineapple grid” in some markets. Notably, it lacks the distinct aroma of genuine rosewood. 2. **Ganbica** Also part of the *Sumac* genus, this wood has a pink or brick-red heartwood that may turn orange-brown over time. It features yellow-brown stripes and a loose pore structure. With an air-dry density of 0.85–0.93 g/cm³, it is sometimes called “Malay Ganbashi” or “Nanyang Redwood.” Again, it lacks the characteristic scent of rosewood. 3. **Big Gan Croton** This wood belongs to the *Sumac* family and has a dark red to chocolate-colored heartwood with pink streaks. It has a diffuse-porous structure and contains gum within the pores. Its air-dry density ranges from 0.76–0.88 g/cm³. Like others, it doesn’t have the unique fragrance of real rosewood. 4. **Lacquered Tree** Also known as *Renqi Paint* or *Nanyang Paint*, this is a member of the *Anacardiaceae* family. It has bright red to deep reddish-brown heartwood with black stripes and no strong odor. Some sellers falsely label it as “Nepal rosewood” to pass it off as more valuable. It is sometimes called “Little Redwood” due to its similar appearance but lacks the signature scent. 5. **Burmese Red Paint** Part of the *Anacardiaceae* family, this wood has a very significant heartwood that turns reddish-purple with dark stripes. It contains parenchyma in ring-shaped bundles and has radial gum lines. Unlike true rosewood, it lacks the distinctive fragrance. 6. **Bubinga** Commonly known as *Hongguibao* or *Brazil Pear*, this wood is often confused with rosewood due to its appearance. However, it lacks the unique aroma of genuine rosewood. 7. **African Rosewood** Marketed as “red pear” or “Indian rosewood,” it is not actually a true rosewood. It has a weak scent, lighter weight (air-dry density: 0.64–0.72 g/cm³), and thick, long board lines. These are key indicators that it is not the real thing. 8. **Angola Rosewood** Known as “high cotton pear” in some regions, it entered the Chinese market in the 1990s. It is similar in appearance to OTHER rosewoods but has a weaker scent and lower density (0.51–0.72 g/cm³). It also has more than two rows of rays, which helps distinguish it. 9. **Wood Pods** A member of the *Fabaceae* family, this wood has a reddish-brown heartwood with a sticky, oily texture. It has single or compound tube holes and visible dark gum. With a high air-dry density of 1.05–1.23 g/cm³, it is also known as “Golden Car Pear” or “Thai Red Pear.” Still, it lacks the signature rosewood aroma. In summary, while large fruit rosewood remains a popular choice, it's crucial to be aware of the many imitations flooding the market. Always check for the distinct aroma of real rosewood, as it is one of the simplest and most reliable ways to tell the difference.
