Since the official implementation of the General Technical Conditions for Children's Furniture (GB28007-2011) on August 1, 2012, the quality of children’s furniture has shown significant improvement, as noted in multiple spot checks conducted by various quality inspection agencies. Over the past three years, most products have met the required standards, reflecting a positive trend in the industry.
However, despite these improvements, formaldehyde levels and structural safety remain the primary concerns in product failures. Even after nearly three years of standard enforcement, ensuring that children’s furniture is both environmentally safe and structurally sound remains a critical challenge for manufacturers.
Environmental protection and safety are now at the forefront of the industry. According to recent inspections, the main issues found in children's furniture include structural safety, warning labels, and occasional environmental concerns like excessive formaldehyde. These findings highlight the ongoing need for stricter compliance and better manufacturing practices.
Luo Wei, an executive deputy director at the National Furniture and Indoor Environmental Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, emphasized that the "General Technical Conditions for Children's Furniture" is China's first mandatory standard specifically tailored for children's furniture. Compared to international standards, this regulation is more rigorous, especially when it comes to structural safety. Europe currently lacks a similar comprehensive system for children's furniture.
Initially, some international brands were hesitant about the new standard, but many eventually adapted their designs to meet Chinese requirements, allowing them to continue operating in the market. This shows the growing influence of the national standard on global players.
The introduction of the standard has also pushed companies to upgrade their production processes and design approaches. Sun Shudong, assistant director at the same center, pointed out that structural safety is the most frequently unmet requirement among enterprises. This calls for re-evaluating product designs, improving edge treatments, and refining manufacturing techniques.
Leading brands like Ximengbao have demonstrated strong compliance with the new standard. With 27 years of experience in the children's furniture sector, Ximengbao has always adhered to the strictest international certifications, even before the national standard was introduced. The brand was among the first to pass the new national quality tests, ensuring not only structural safety but also low levels of harmful substances and flame resistance.
Ximengbao takes its environmental responsibility seriously, using FSC-certified South American pine and applying food-grade UV painting technology. Their products have formaldehyde levels that are less than one-tenth of the national standard, and they have detected no harmful elements such as lead, mercury, cadmium, or chromium.
As consumer awareness grows, the children’s furniture market is expected to become more professional and regulated. Companies that fail to meet the standards will gradually be phased out. In the long run, only those who prioritize safety, environmental friendliness, and high-quality craftsmanship will thrive in this competitive landscape.
In conclusion, the future of the children's furniture industry looks promising, with a clear shift towards safer, greener, and more innovative products that meet the needs of modern families.
