Leading green building design in Hong Kong

Since the official implementation of the General Technical Conditions for Children's Furniture (GB28007-2011) on August 1, 2012, the quality of children’s furniture has shown significant improvement, as noted in multiple spot checks conducted by various quality inspection agencies over the past three years. Despite this progress, issues such as excessive formaldehyde levels and structural safety remain the primary causes of product failures. Recent reports from quality inspection departments highlight that while the standard has led to better compliance, environmental safety and structural integrity are still key challenges for manufacturers. As one of the key contributors to the new national standard, Luo Wei, executive deputy director of the National Furniture and Indoor Environmental Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, emphasized that this is the first mandatory standard in China specifically designed for children’s furniture. Compared to international standards, it sets a higher bar for structural safety and limits harmful substances effectively. Initially, some well-known international brands faced challenges in meeting the new requirements, but many eventually adapted their designs or continued selling in the Chinese market by making necessary adjustments. This shows the growing importance of adhering to the national standard. The introduction of the standard has pushed companies to upgrade their production processes and design strategies. Sun Shudong, assistant director at the same center, pointed out that structural safety is the most frequently unmet requirement among manufacturers. To address this, companies must re-evaluate their product designs, improve edge finishing, and refine their manufacturing techniques. Leading brands like Ximengbao have excelled in meeting these standards. With over 27 years of experience, Ximengbao has long followed the world’s strictest international certifications, even before the national standard was introduced. The brand was the first to pass the new national standard tests, ensuring not only structural safety but also strict control over harmful substances and flame resistance. Ximengbao uses high-quality materials, such as FSC-certified South American pine, and applies food-grade UV painting to ensure non-toxic, odorless products. Their formaldehyde content is less than 1/10 of the national standard (≤1.5mg/L), and they have successfully eliminated eight types of harmful elements, including lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium. As consumer awareness of safety and environmental protection increases, the industry is gradually moving toward stricter regulation. Smaller companies with outdated production methods are being phased out, while those that prioritize safety and sustainability are gaining trust. In the future, only brands that meet rigorous standards will thrive, offering safe, eco-friendly, and well-designed children’s furniture that meets the needs of modern families.
