How to effectively ventilate the winter house

Good ventilation is essential for maintaining a healthy and productive environment for broiler chickens. Proper air circulation ensures that the house remains at an optimal temperature while providing sufficient oxygen to support the birds' metabolic needs. Oxygen plays a critical role in the growth, health, and feed conversion efficiency of broilers. Effective ventilation helps remove moisture, ammonia, dust, and excess heat from the poultry house, ensuring a clean and fresh atmosphere for the flock. Poor ventilation can lead to high ammonia levels, which negatively impact bird performance and increase mortality rates. Many farmers tend to focus only on temperature control during the early stages of brooding, neglecting the importance of ventilation. This oversight can result in respiratory issues, ascites, and other health problems later in the production cycle. As broilers grow, their oxygen demand increases, along with their waste output. Maintaining proper ventilation becomes even more crucial in the later stages of development. If not managed well, poor air quality can significantly reduce growth rates and increase the risk of disease. In the final phase, where weight gain is rapid, even a small number of deaths can result in significant financial losses. Therefore, effective ventilation management is vital to ensure the birds remain healthy and productive. To achieve good ventilation, two main methods are commonly used: the minimum ventilation system and minimum ventilation control. The minimum ventilation system ensures that the oxygen level in the house remains at 19.2%, which is essential for the birds’ well-being. It involves controlling the exhaust fans to operate in cycles, typically 2 minutes on and 8 minutes off, depending on environmental conditions and the age of the chickens. The second method, minimum ventilation control, focuses on meeting the oxygen requirements of the birds based on their body weight. By calculating the necessary air exchange rate, farmers can adjust fan operation times to maintain optimal air quality without compromising temperature stability. For example, if there are 5000 chickens averaging 1.5 kg, the required air volume per minute can be calculated and compared to the fan capacity to determine how many fans are needed. In practice, it’s important to monitor both temperature and humidity regularly. During colder months, extra care must be taken to avoid exposing the birds to cold drafts while still maintaining adequate airflow. Using automatic controllers or manually adjusting fan cycles can help achieve this balance. Additionally, ensuring that the air intake is properly distributed and not blowing directly onto the birds can prevent stress and discomfort. By implementing these ventilation strategies, farmers can create a healthier and more efficient environment for their broilers, ultimately improving productivity and profitability. Whether using automated systems or manual controls, the key is to maintain consistent air quality and temperature throughout the entire growing period.
