Development and status of anti-wax, drag reduction and anti-corrosion technologies for oil and gas field pipelines

The development and current status of anti-wax, anti-corrosion, and drag-reduction technologies for oil and gas field pipelines have become increasingly important as the industry continues to expand. Researchers such as Wang Lijuan, Tian Jun, and Xue Qunjizhong have contributed significantly to understanding and improving these technologies, particularly in the context of pipeline inner and outer wall protection. With the continuous exploration and utilization of new gas fields, long-distance pipeline transportation has become a key challenge. The need for effective anti-wax, anti-corrosion, and drag-reduction solutions has never been more critical. In the transportation of crude oil, wax deposition on the pipeline walls is a common issue that increases flow resistance and reduces efficiency. This problem is exacerbated by temperature fluctuations and the composition of the crude oil itself. Additionally, corrosion from components like sulfides in natural gas can severely damage both the inner and outer walls of buried pipelines. The external environment, including soil salinity and acidic conditions, further accelerates corrosion, making it essential to develop advanced protective measures. Over the years, various technologies have been developed to address these challenges. One of the most widely used methods is the application of chemical additives, which help reduce wax formation and improve the flowability of crude oil. These additives, such as pour point depressants and drag-reducing agents, have shown promising results in both domestic and international applications. However, their use in long-distance pipelines, especially in remote areas, is still in its early stages and requires further research and optimization. Another innovative approach involves the use of magnetic fields to influence wax crystal growth. By applying strong magnetic fields, the formation and aggregation of wax crystals can be suppressed, leading to improved crude oil flow. Similarly, the application of organic polymer coatings on the inner walls of pipelines has proven effective in reducing wax adhesion and friction, thereby enhancing transport efficiency. On the outer walls of buried pipelines, anti-corrosion technologies have evolved significantly. Traditional materials such as coal tar asphalt and petroleum asphalt have been gradually replaced by more advanced options like epoxy powder coatings, polyethylene adhesive tapes, and multi-layer composite coatings. These modern coatings offer better resistance to environmental stress, mechanical damage, and microbial attack, ensuring longer pipeline life and reduced maintenance costs. Cathodic protection systems are also crucial in preventing external corrosion. By using sacrificial anodes or impressed current systems, the corrosion process can be effectively controlled, especially in areas with high soil resistivity. In China, cathodic protection is widely implemented in pipelines located in arid regions such as Xinjiang, where traditional methods face significant challenges due to low groundwater levels and high soil resistivity. In addition to external protection, internal anti-corrosion measures are equally important. Technologies such as glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) linings, fluorine-containing plastic linings, and multi-resin modified heavy anti-corrosion paints have been successfully applied in various oil and gas fields. These materials provide excellent resistance to corrosion and high-temperature environments, making them ideal for use in harsh conditions. Overall, the continuous development of anti-wax, anti-corrosion, and drag-reduction technologies is vital for the safe and efficient operation of oil and gas pipelines. As the industry moves towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, the adoption of advanced coating and protection systems will play a crucial role in ensuring the longevity and reliability of pipeline infrastructure.
