Color and Language Art of Book Cover Design

Abstract : Starting from the importance of cover color language in academic papers, the characteristics of image color language and imagery color language are discussed respectively. Taking the cover color language of series of academic papers as an example, Based on the characteristics of color language, we must pay attention to integrity, uniqueness, and cognition, so that the color language is sublimated into an artistic image that accurately conveys the meaning of the language, allowing the audience to reach a mutual exchange with the content.

Introduction

The cover of academic papers is like the appearance of a person. It is an external manifestation of temperament and character, that is, the extension of the spiritual content and cultural connotation of books. The nature of the content of academic papers determines its cover form. According to its content requirements, it must be academic, normative and concise. This will inevitably produce boring, dry, dull, and rigid feelings. Color language is the most active element of many visual languages on the cover, and it is combined with other visual elements to deliver information to readers in the first place.

1 The characteristics of the cover color language

Compared with visual languages such as graphics and text, color language, as a special element of the cover language of the essay cover, plays the role of finishing touch. In general, the color language of the cover of academic papers has the following characteristics:

1) Image

Imagery is the most direct form of communication at the surface. In general, it contains the following two points:

1 Concise and intuitive

When a color is presented in front of a person, it is a simple combination of hue, lightness, and purity. It gives people the most intuitive tips with conciseness. It has strong visibility and readability. Without or without complex graphic and textual interpretations, one can intuitively appreciate the meaning conveyed by this language.

2 lively

Beautiful and vivid language can impress people and infect people more than dry and dry language. The vividness of the color language is full of rich emotions, and its vividness is conveyed through the rhythm of form and the momentum that it constitutes.

First of all, the areas of color, shape, material, color brightness, purity, hue, color location, direction, etc., are in a state of change. If these changes are given in a certain order, they can also produce a tone. Different color rhythms show different color effects.

Second, the trend of color is also one of the most expressive aspects of vivid language. The color arrangement has a variety of possible directions, such as horizontal, vertical, oblique, etc. Different directions have different performance results. "Vertical direction" is the most powerful duality in the lateral direction. It means lightness, height and depth. "Diagonal direction" produces a sense of movement and leads people to the depths of the screen. Slashes often create a illusion of perspective, and have a strong sense of direction and depth. And "circular" has a strong tendency to concentrate.

2) Imagery

Compared with visuality, imagery is a form of communication that is closer to deeper and indirect. Imagery is a kind of construction based on the designer's full knowledge of the content. It is a kind of thinking existence. It does not equate to the internal text, but it is at a higher level of thinking to understand the visualization of the substance of the text.

1 symbolic association

The symbolic color is the product of different nationalities in different history, different geographical environments and different cultural backgrounds. It is a common practice of people in the long-term social life, both common and individual. The cover color language has a different social character through the cultural connotation expressed by the symbol and the association, which is also the cultural characteristic expressed on the cover. The selection of successful colors will make people have a mental association. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the different symbolic meanings of specific situations and use symbolic meanings to properly formulate ideal colors. The symbolic association of the cover examples of serialized academic papers is described in Table 1.

2 abstract generalization

Abstraction is the root of the color language's survival. Gauguin once said: "Color should be the result of thought, not the result of observation." Because abstract things and abstract emotional factors exist, people can make different associations when they see different colors, so that different colors can express different symbolism. The abstractness also shows the general ability of color language. If the concept of “water” is expressed in terms of both color and form, the morphological language often has various uncertainties. It may be reminiscent of a static lake or a dynamic river waterfall. The color abstraction is “water”. Derived from the concept of a unified concept, water is flowing, water is clear, and water is full of energy and power. In short, the color representation space of abstract forms is broad and far-reaching, and it drives people to associate, understand, supplement, and experience, so that the “limited” artistic language is included in the “infinite” broad artistic world. More rich in aesthetic value.

3 fuzzy uncertainty

Because of the audience's social environment, life experience, and humanistic qualities, different interpretations of the language-transmitted information are available. In the cover design, special attention should be paid to the attributes of the objective language and the signifier of the color language. The subjective color language should be appropriately removed to avoid obstacles in information communication. The color information encoding and decoding interworking process is not a strictly one-to-one mode that determines the uncertainty (fuzziness) of the cover color language, it is necessary to reduce information redundancy as much as possible, eliminate information noise, and thus reduce information transfer Distortion.
