Komet: Actively respond to the challenges brought about by "mechatronics"

Komet and Mapal will enter the machine tool product platform together and always actively respond to these challenges. "Dr. Ing. Jürgen Fronius of Komet Group said so.

Komet General Manager Mike Maid

Komet is one of the world's top manufacturers of mechatronic products. Dr. Jürgen Fronius is the director of the Memet Integration Department of Komet Group in Besigheim, Germany. He explained the implementation of this special technology in the tool industry and its related application areas.

The goal of this high-efficiency system is to reach 8000 rpm, which exceeds the scope defined in this field before

Why are your mechatronic products made? For example, U-axle systems, each of which basically consists of a compact rotary tool holder and a separate slider driven by a servo motor and a screw-level spindle.

Fronius: Of course, it must be distinguished according to the process. Tools with a process exceeding 10mm are unstable in use. In other words, the user can process the rotating contour of steel or casting according to the minimum cutting speed. Of course, the cutting speed can also be accelerated. However, it depends on the structure of the part and the size of the compound tool-whether to allow such operation is determined according to the diameter of the workpiece to be processed.

Can you explain, according to the Komet product specification, the application of high-efficiency system (HPS), is it possible to machine composite tools and rotating cutter heads that are still unimaginable on the machining center?

Fronius: The high-efficiency system is positioned for applications with large revolutions, up to 8000 revolutions. It can exceed the maximum process range of ± 4mm-that is, a total of more than 8mm. According to this principle, even if a tool with a smaller diameter is used, a higher cutting speed will be obtained. Because the system has a standard direct path measurement system, the accuracy involved can also show new dimensions. HPS uses a compact balancing system, so you don't need to rotate multiple times to get the driving force.

What products will Komet show at EMO2011? What operations will these new tools be used for?

Fronius: According to the expectations of the products already mentioned, EMO will introduce the integration of different modules of HPS, such as the balance and direct path measurement system in the classic planar slider system, and high quality can be obtained through increased revolutions and accuracy performance. According to the improvement of quality performance, the intended use can be determined. Basically, we recommend that the mechatronics system be used on small and medium-sized machine tool equipment, which can be flexibly welded. We use high-performance planar sliders as a large-volume case.

Both you and Mapal are promoting the use of a "mechatronics" unified interface: how can this solution win users in the market and what progress can be made?

Fronius: Basically, the public's response to "mechatronics" is positive, but this mutually beneficial solution can only solve some integration problems one-sidedly. In addition, the major change caused by the use of such an interface is the cross-sectional components of the two systems that are compatible, because the volume after installation is larger than the original components that need to be considered. In fact, we can assume that Komet and Mapal will enter the tool design platform together to consistently and actively respond to these challenges.

Mechatronics interface

Use a unified interface to reduce costs

Two professional tool manufacturers, Mapal and Komet, have developed "Mechatronics" methods with public standards for U-axle pre-installation. According to the instructions of the two companies, this method is for the future to set the machine tool equipment to "mechatronics". Those who need to rotate axial plunger pumps, connecting rods, valve seats, bores or turbine casings have relied on these special equipment for many years-most of them require multiple machining steps for rotation and milling . In the future, flexible standard machine tools that can process complex parts will be widely adopted. With the U-axle system, the additional CNC control axis will significantly increase the possibility of machine tool machining. U-axle systems are often referred to as mechatronic products, which include tools that can usually adjust cutting properties during rotation.

Therefore, the U-axle system can be replaced as easily as standard tools. These systems must be mechanical and electronic integrated systems. If this integrated combination is not immediately replaced in the existing machine tool, then the follow-up will usually cost more. Both tool companies have discovered that there are obstacles that prevent potential customers from using the U-axle system. The goal of the new "Mechatronics" standard is to minimize integration costs and reduce the overall price of the U-axle system. Mapal and Komet standardized the interface set on the machine side, and established a new U-axle pre-installation standard for new machine tools.

By using the "Mechatronics" interface for pre-installation, the machine tool manufacturer has a new point of sale because the manufacturer can provide customers with other options. Customers can decide whether to purchase U-axle system according to actual needs. The cables in the system have all been set up, and the axis and tool changer have also been adjusted. There is space for additional shafts in the switch box, so it is only necessary to directly install the system and arrange the control parts accordingly. In a short period of time, even if users use standard equipment, they can perform more complicated internal and external rotation processing.
