After failing to find badminton equipment, they made their own game using a Wiffle ball, wooden paddles, and a lowered badminton net. The sport got its name from Joel’s dog, Pickles, who would chase the ball and hide it. From there, the game quickly gained traction in the community.
Essentially a mix of ping pong, tennis, and badminton, pickleball is played on a smaller court and can be enjoyed as singles or doubles. The goal is to hit the ball over the net and score points. It's a great low-impact workout that's easy to learn, making it perfect for players of all ages. Maggie noticed that most pickleball paddles looked outdated and lacked personality. That gap in the market led her to start Recess Pickleball, a brand focused on design, fun, and accessibility. Partnering with her childhood friend Grace Moore, she brought a fresh, playful aesthetic to the sport. Inspired by the nostalgia of childhood recess, Recess Pickleball quickly became a hit, bringing joy and creativity to players of all ages.

Maggie Brown: As founder and CEO of Recess Pickleball, Maggie has led the brand from a pandemic project to a thriving business. Prior to starting Recess, she worked in strategic partnerships at Uber and ran a nonprofit in Uganda. A graduate of the University of Texas, Maggie loves traveling, learning about cultures, and bringing people together.
Grace Moore: As co-founder and Chief Brand Officer, Grace brings her creative background to every aspect of Recess Pickleball. From branding to marketing, she ensures the brand stays true to its playful, inviting spirit. A graduate of Belmont University, Grace enjoys painting, hosting, and spending time with her family.
