Project Objective
The goal of this project was to design a USB drive that accurately represented the first zombie seen in the pilot episode of *The Walking Dead*, known as the Bicycle Girl. The team aimed to create a product that would not only excite fans but also function as a reliable and high-quality storage device. Balancing both form and function was key to ensuring the final product would be a hit among collectors and everyday users alike.
How We Did It
This project showcased the creativity and dedication of the CustomUSB team. From concept to completion, the process involved extensive research, design iterations, and close collaboration with AMC to ensure the final product met all licensing and quality standards. The team was determined to bring the Bicycle Girl to life in a way that honored the show’s legacy while offering something truly unique to fans.
Licensing
As a licensed AMC product, the USB drive had to go through a rigorous approval process. AMC has strict guidelines for merchandise, and CustomUSB worked closely with the network to ensure every detail was accurate. After initial discussions, the team proposed several zombie designs, and the Bicycle Girl was ultimately chosen as the perfect representation of the show’s iconic undead. Once the concept was approved, the design and production phase began.
Initial Design
Once the decision was made to model the USB after the Bicycle Girl, the design team knew they had a chance to create something truly special. They spent time brainstorming poses and features, eventually settling on a dynamic stance where the zombie reaches out as if trying to grab someone. One of the most creative ideas was making the user pull out the "guts" of the zombie to reveal the USB inside. This not only added a fun interactive element but also protected the USB from damage.
Finishing Touches
To give the USB an authentic, collectible feel, each unit is hand-painted. This means no two USBs are exactly the same—each one is a unique piece of art. The body is made from durable injected PVC, and the base is spray-painted before the intricate details are carefully applied by hand. The final touch is a clear display box, making it easy for fans to showcase their new treasure.
