Gateball is an outdoor sport often referred to as a "shuttlecock" game, played on a flat surface or lawn using a mallet to hit a ball through an iron gate. This article is based on the official rules set by the World Croquet Association.
**First, the Gateball Field**
The gateball field is rectangular and consists of a competition area (commonly known as the playing field) and a restricted area. The ground must be smooth and free of obstacles.
1. **Competition Area**: It measures 20 meters in length and 15 meters in width (with a tolerance of ±5 cm). The boundaries are defined by the outer edge of the stripline.
2. **Restricted Area**: This is the space located 0.5 to 1 meter outside the competition area, marked by the outer edge of a band-shaped limit line.
- The **competition line**, also known as the sideline, has a width between 1 to 5 cm.
- The **limit line** runs parallel to the sideline and also has a width of 1 to 5 cm.
**Note**: The color of the lines should contrast with the ground for clear visibility.
**Game Lines and Corners**:
- The game field includes four corners: the kick-off zone.
- These corners are labeled in a counterclockwise direction as the first corner, second corner, third corner, and fourth corner (often abbreviated as Corner 1, Corner 2, Corner 3, and Corner 4).
- The edges between these corners form four main lines: the first, second, third, and fourth lines.
**Teeing Area**:
- The teeing area is a rectangle with two long sides and four lines. Its outer edge aligns with the limit line.
- The short sides are perpendicular to the four lines, with their vertical points positioned 1 meter and 3 meters away from the first line.
**Second, the Goals**
There are three goals on the field: the first door, second door, and third door.
- Each goal is made of a circular metal rod with a diameter of 1 cm (±1 mm), shaped like a "â”┓". It is vertically fixed to the ground.
- The crossbar is 19 cm above the ground and spans 22 cm between the two posts.
**Goal Positions**:
1. **First Door**: The goal line is parallel to the four lines, 4 meters from the outer edge of the four lines, with the center point 2 meters from the edge.
2. **Second Door**: The goal line is parallel to the first line, 12 meters from the outer edge of the first line, and 2 meters from the outer edge of the second line.
3. **Third Door**: The goal line is parallel to the fourth line, 10 meters from the outer edge of the fourth line, and 2 meters from the outer edge of the four lines.
**Note**: The organizing committee may adjust the position of the goals slightly, and the goal color should contrast with the field for better visibility.
- A numbered sign can be placed directly above each goal, with a flag no wider than 3 cm and no longer than 10 cm.
**Third, the Finish Column**
The finish column is a vertical metal rod with a diameter of 2 cm (±1 mm), placed at the center of the field, 20 cm above the ground.
**Note**: The finish column’s color should stand out against the field for easy identification.
**Fourth, the Free Zone**
The free zone is located outside the limit line. It should provide enough space to ensure the game flows smoothly.
Only players, coaches, referees, and invited guests are allowed inside the free zone.
The exact boundaries of the free zone are determined by the event organizers.
**Fifth, Replacement Seats**
Replacement seats are located within the free zone. They include benches or chairs for athletes and coaches to rest during the game.
**Sixth, Additional Facilities**
A scoreboard must be installed on the field so that both teams and spectators can easily view the scores.
The location of the scoreboard should not obstruct the playing area and is decided by the organizers.
