Local Motors made a big splash at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago, where their 3D-printed Strati car captured global attention. On Saturday, September 13, 2014, the company partnered with Cincinnati Incorporated, Oak Ridge National Laboratories, and The Association For Manufacturing Technology to showcase their groundbreaking 3D-printed driveable vehicle for the first time.
The Strati was created in three distinct stages during the event. In the first phase, it was printed using Cincinnati Incorporated’s BAAM (Big Additive Manufacturing Machine) over the course of 44 hours. Next, Thermwood provided machines that helped reduce material usage through techniques like full-day milling. Finally, the team from Local Motors completed the last stage by assembling the car, putting the final touches on the Strati. All it took was inserting the key and starting the car for its maiden voyage.
Now, Local Motors has taken the concept even further by announcing the creation of an ultra-precise 1:10 scale model of the Strati. This allows anyone to print their own Mini Strati at home. According to the Antarctic Bear 3D Printing Network, the printable files used for this mini version are the same as those used for the full-sized Strati shown in Chicago. So now, you can create your own miniature version using your own 3D printer.
The 1:10 scale model includes all necessary parts, such as wheels, steering shafts, suspension components, and even foot pedals. Below are some detailed images from Local Motors that will help you with the assembly process.
