American scholars first "functional cure" AIDS infant

American researchers reported on the 3rd that they achieved the first "functional cure" of HIV-infected infants through antiretroviral therapy.

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Children's Medical Center, the University of Mississippi and other institutions reported on the 3rd Congress of Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections held in Atlanta, the United States on the 3rd that they selected one two years ago. A baby girl infected with HIV through mother-to-child transmission is the target of treatment. Thirty hours after the baby was born, the researchers administered combined antiretroviral therapy.

Tests have shown that after treatment, the amount of HIV in the girl ’s blood has decreased significantly. After 29 days of birth, the HIV in her body has not been detected. The researchers continued to treat her with antiretroviral therapy within the next 18 months, and found that her HIV antibodies were still negative within 10 months after stopping treatment, and no HIV was found in routine blood tests.

The researchers said: "After antiretroviral treatment of neonates can prevent the hidden HIV from infecting host cells, this therapy can clear and suppress the virus, and achieve a" functional cure "under non-life treatment."

"Functional cure" means that the AIDS virus in the infected person is completely suppressed and the body's immune function is normal. Even without treatment, it is difficult to detect the virus in the blood of the child by conventional methods.

Researchers said that eradication of the AIDS virus, that is, a "fundamental cure" for AIDS, is currently difficult to achieve. Medical treatment for HIV-infected infants generally begins between 3 and 4 months after birth, so early and accurate antiretroviral therapy is of great significance to infants infected with HIV.

According to reports, there are currently about 2.5 million babies infected with HIV worldwide, and about 1700 new cases of mother-to-child transmission of HIV each day.
