Folding machine basics

There are two basic folding methods and folding machines. Barrier folding machines are used for parallel folding and are often used for folding leaflets and booklets. This type of folding usually folds the printed sheets in one direction twice or more.

The other is a knife folding machine. It first folds the printed sheets once, then rotates the printed sheets by 90 degrees and then folds them a second time. One such process is completed to form four pages; two such processes form eight pages. , and so on. There is also a folding machine that combines the functions of a fence folding machine and a knife folding machine and is usually used for bookbinding.

The fence type folding machine uses a diagonal roller to position a sheet on the side rails. The transfer roller pushes the print between the two metal plates. When considering the purchase of a folding machine, the folding layout, paper size, paper thickness, and material should be considered. Most commercial printers typically fold 28x40 inch paper; professional bookbinding companies have a wider choice.
