The girls have always had a knack for crafting costumes for their beloved toys. This year, with the uncertainty surrounding Halloween activities, it seems like trick-or-treating and hosting parties at home might not happen. But at least our dolls can still enjoy the festive spirit! We’ve been having a blast creating these simple yet adorable costumes using colored felt. One of the best parts is that these outfits can fit dolls of various sizes. A few years back, we even made some Halloween costumes for our Lottie dolls.
As I sit here preparing the materials, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia. It’s amazing how something as simple as felt can transform a plain doll into a character straight out of a storybook. For this project, we gathered orange and dark green felt, needle and thread, and fabric glue.
To create the pumpkin costume, we first folded the orange felt in half and sketched a pumpkin shape slightly larger than the doll’s body. Cutting out a hole for the head while leaving the fold intact ensures the costume stays snug around the shoulders. After sewing down the sides, we left small openings for the arms. Next, we cut out spooky shapes—like triangular eyes and a jagged mouth—from the dark green felt and glued them onto the pumpkin using fabric adhesive. For the hat, we traced a smaller pumpkin silhouette onto two pieces of orange felt, sewed the edges together (making sure it fit snugly), and added a green felt stalk at the top.
While working on the pumpkin costume, I remembered how much fun we had making other Halloween-themed outfits. The spider costume, for instance, required purple and black felt along with some googly eyes. Folding the purple felt in half, we cut out a circular shape with a head opening and added wiggly black legs. Stitching along the sides while incorporating the legs was a bit tricky, but once done, it gave the doll a playful, eight-legged vibe. Adding a smiley face and attaching googly eyes with fabric glue completed the look.
Speaking of smiles, we also crafted a sleek black cat costume by tracing one of the doll’s dresses as a template. To give it a touch of feline charm, we attached a white felt oval to the “tummy†and created cat ears using black felt.
Thinking beyond costumes, we decided to make a matching pumpkin-shaped bag. Cutting two orange felt circles and stitching the bottom edge transformed them into a bag-like structure. A strip of dark green felt served as the handle, which we sewed in place. Using a fabric pen, we drew a cheerful pumpkin face on the front.
And then there were the conker pumpkins—tiny, perfect spheres that make ideal miniature pumpkins for dolls. All it took was two googly eyes and a Sharpie to draw a mouth, and voila, instant charm!
Looking back at old photos, I’m reminded of a picture taken about four years ago. The twins are holding their dolls, looking so young and carefree. It’s heartwarming to see how much they’ve grown since then, yet their love for dressing up dolls remains unchanged. These little projects remind me of the joy found in simple creativity—a timeless tradition worth preserving.
