More than half of the millions of mahogany furniture fake ingredients

More than half of the so-called mahogany furniture on the market is not actually made of genuine redwood. This alarming trend has been revealed by Xu Xiaolin, an expert from the Shandong Province Redwood Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, who recently evaluated the current state of the mahogany furniture market. A resident in Jinan recently sent a set of supposedly red rosewood furniture to the Fiber Inspection Bureau for testing. The results showed that the furniture was heavily adulterated, with complex methods used to mislead consumers. According to Xu Xiaolin, many products are only partially made of real mahogany, while the rest is composed of cheaper or fake materials. During the inspection, Xu Xiaolin examined several drawers from the furniture. He pointed out that in one narrow drawer, only the part near the handle was genuine mahogany, while the rest was made of other wood. In another wide drawer, most of the material was mahogany, but the bottom was a mix of mahogany and sapwood. Sapwood, he explained, is not true mahogany—it's softer, lighter, and often contains insects. This kind of deception can make up nearly half of the furniture, significantly reducing its actual redwood content. Consumers are paying premium prices for what they believe to be authentic redwood, only to end up with substandard products. These hidden tricks have led to widespread confusion and frustration among buyers, highlighting the serious issues in the mahogany furniture market. Redwood is not a single type of wood but refers to a group of hardwoods, classified into 33 species under five genera and eight categories according to Chinese national standards. The most expensive varieties include fragrant Dalbergia (Hainan huanghuali), sandalwood rosewood, and others, while the cheapest option is wenge wood. A small piece of fragrant rosewood could cost as much as one million yuan, whereas a set of wenge furniture might only cost a few thousand. The names of some woods can be misleading. For example, "African rosewood" is not a true rosewood, and "red sandalwood" is not the same as "green sandalwood." Only the Latin name of the wood can accurately identify it. Xu Xiaolin emphasized that proper labeling with scientific names is essential to avoid being deceived. Moreover, the craftsmanship of the furniture also plays a significant role in determining its value. High-quality workmanship can greatly increase the price of a piece, even if the wood itself is not the most expensive. Different types of redwood have varying growth periods, with some taking hundreds of years to mature. The quality of the wood, such as the density of the grain or the size of the tree, also affects its price. In conclusion, while mahogany furniture remains highly sought after, consumers must be cautious. Understanding the differences between genuine and fake materials, checking for accurate labeling, and valuing craftsmanship are all crucial steps in making informed purchases.
