After a cigarette is lit, nicotine will be released into the air, leaving it on the surface of indoor objects for weeks or even months. The researchers also found that indoor nitrite content is higher than outdoor. Nicotine reacts with nitrous acid to form carcinogen nitrosamines. The researchers found that the surface of objects in the smoker's car had a high nitrosamine content. After the cigarette smoke has dissipated, more than half of this carcinogen remains for at least 2 hours. Researchers point out that people are most likely to be exposed to nitrosamines by contacting cigarette smoke contaminating surfaces such as clothing, furniture and even skin or hair. Researchers warn that infants and children are at a much higher risk of exposure to these carcinogens than adults.
