Pre-press development between two sessions of Drupa

In the past, the industry had to do a year-end summary of technology every year, but the pre-press technology and economic development in 2003 was very small, so we have summarized the development from Drupa2000 until Drupa2004 and made a brief review.

Digital camera

Digital cameras have developed at an incredible rate. In the sales market in 2002, the sales volume of digital cameras exceeded that of traditional cameras for the first time. Today, the pixels of semi-professional digital cameras have reached 4 million to 6 million. Competitors in the digital camera market, such as Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus and Sony, are now aiming to improve the dynamic range of their products.

Digital cameras have occupied a place in professional photography studios, and they have excluded traditional cameras from static photography. For event photography, especially fashion photography, film and color transparent positives still have a greater advantage.

Color scanner

Nowadays, the photo manuscripts of newspapers and magazines are almost all digital images, so the demand for scanned images is declining. Although pre-press enterprises that print fine prints or photo albums still use scanners, the number is getting smaller. However, many higher-quality prints sometimes use high-end roller scanners such as screen company SG8060MK II. Many prepress companies like to buy high-end fast platform scanners from Creo, ESKO-Graphics, Fujifilm and Screen. Heidelberg will adjust the production and sales of drum-type and flatbed scanners in 2004.

Desktop systems and software

In terms of hardware, more and more hard disk storage simplifies the process of data exchange, and even laptops have ushered in 40 ~ 80G storage units, which allows pre-press enterprises to store and protect terabyte data And scan, and keep these data in online access. As the compatibility of the application is greatly enhanced, the PC and Mac machines no longer need to be separated. In terms of operating system, Apple Computer began to use Mac OS X system; Microsoft has brought a new stable operating system Windows XP, and office automation software Office XP.

In addition, in terms of applications, OuarkPress dominates, and only some companies gradually switch to Adobe InDesign. The creative departments of these companies use a complete set of Adobe software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, which are cheaper than OuarkXPress, and the pre-press department. Ability to accept and process these data. The most important development of prepress software in 2003 was undoubtedly the introduction of Adobe Acrobat 6.0, which greatly simplified the prepress process and generated PDF1.5 format files.

Workflow management

Before printing, people understood “workflow management” as “rapid and reliable processing of rasterization of documents and proofs used for plate-making, and output of full-page film or printing plates”. Each supplier of direct plate-making machines can provide one or more systems with different efficiencies. Most of these management systems are sold together with CTP equipment, but the rapid increase in data volume makes high efficiency, and the scalable workflow management system replaces the previous Introduced procedures. In 2000, the JDF format was developed by Agfa, Heidelberg, Manroland and Adobe. JDF can use electronic subpoenas to control the entire workflow of printing companies from pick-up to post-press processing, laying an important foundation for open standards. The use of open standards can make existing software compatible with each other, and can be modularly expanded into a "network printing plant."

Digital proofing system

Today, digital proofing is mostly achieved using inkjet. In the case of mastering color management, digital proofing can achieve a high degree of consistency with offset printing.

On Drupa2000, color color film transfer proofing was also promoted vigorously. At that time, the thermal CTP printing transfer film was used, but now only in the packaging field can we understand that this color color film transfer proofing provides Pantone color and gold and silver proofs. the value of.

Laser imagesetter

The large-format laser imagesetter ended the era of manual imposition with film. In the past four years, although the use of CTP has not been fully launched, most printing companies have formulated plans to introduce CTP, so the demand for laser imagesetters has plummeted.

Computer-to-plate

At around the end of the 1990s, the thermal drum CTP, represented by Creo Trendsetter, adopted the external drum structure and achieved great success in the market. Today, the main suppliers of thermal CTP are: Creo, Heidelberg, Presstek, Great Japan Screen and Fujifilm. Creo launched Trendsetter and Lotem fully automatic thermal CTP; Heidelberg launched the Topsetter series of CTP; Agfa Corporation seized the thermal CTP market with Xcalibur of very large format, and exhibited Xcalibur 45 semi-automatic folio at Print 2001 Thermal CTP.

However, Agfa demonstrated the purple laser CTP solution in Drupa2000, which can process the printing plate under yellow light, so the inner drum CTP has attracted people's attention. With the launch of Agfa Lithostau Ultra-V Purple Laser Silver Salt Edition, Agfa's Folio CTP has shown a large sales momentum. At that time, Barco, Bolford, and Krauss also profited from the purple laser CTP market. Later, Heidelberg and Escher-Grad launched Prosetter and Cobalt series inner drum CTP. After Agfa, Mitsubishi Paper Corporation launched the purple laser silver salt version SDPAlpha-V, Fuji Brillia LPNV and Mitsubishi Chemical LV-1 purple laser polymer printing plate have also been launched. Fujifilm has launched an inner drum CTP for these two printing plates. At the Print 2001 exhibition, Esko-Graphics, a merged company of Barco and Bolford, launched the PlateDriver inner drum CTP. With the joint efforts of these companies, at the end of 2003, the inner drum CTP achieved higher sales.

Is thermal sensitivity the best?

Companies such as Creo, Presstek, and Screen are optimistic about thermal technology, so they only provide thermal CTP. By the summer of 2003, Creo had sold 5,000 CTPs. Judging from the current global market, thermal CTP still accounts for the majority of the 14,000 CTPs sold.

Agfa, ECRM, Fujifilm and Heidelberg offer two CTP technologies, thermal and visible light, for customers to choose. Among them, Agfa, Kodak Polylight and Fujifilm have a strategic advantage, they can bundle their CTP with the printing plate. It is for this reason that Creo recently acquired the plate-making factory in South Africa to provide its own CTP users with positive thermal CTP version.

However, the disadvantage of the above CTP system is that the CTP printing plate is more expensive, so there is a CTcP system that uses a purple laser to expose the ordinary PS plate. For example, CTcP of BasyPrint was officially launched on the market after Drupa2000. 419 units were sold, of which 180 were sold in 2003.

In addition, CTcP of the two companies Esko-Graphics and Escher-Grad will also be seen at Drupa2004.
